From what I read at the time of purchase, I thought this was spring loaded, like another plastic one I had years ago. All this has is a metal piece that presses on the end of the paper towel in order to hold it more securely while tearing. This works, kind of. The way most companies roll their paper towels (even Bounty) is to roll them loosely so that the roll looks bigger, so the metal clip many times just lets the towels slip when turning, so three and four slip off before you can stop them. Now, I'm sure there are many zen paper towel rippers out there, who pause and then tear purposefully. I am not one of them, however, and so every few tears, I have to rewind the paper towel roll. (minus one star) The end is getting spots of rust on it already. I was afraid of that. (minus 2 stars) It is very heavy and awkward to install. It was a two person job, with one installing and the other holding it to the wall. It is very expensive for a meh. (minus 3 stars, and I thank you)
