MegaFood - Men Over 55 MultiVitamin Review
For the past year, my supplements were obtained from MegaFood products. Today, I canceled all of my Amazon Subscribe and Save subscriptions of MegaFood products and have now switched over to Jigsaw Health and Garden of Life MyKind supplements, and here is why. I incorrectly assumed that the vitamins within MegaFood supplements were all derived from "all natural farm fresh whole food" sources. Instead, MegaFood supplements are not predominately sourced from "farm fresh whole foods" as their labeling and marketing led me to believe, but rather may predominately contain synthetically sourced nutrient supplements that are then mixed with bakers yeast that is then converted to a pill. If you look at the ingredient list, the source listed for nearly all vitamins is s. cerevisiae (bakers yeast). Essentially the process is to take a broth of vitamins (synthetic and natural) and allow the yeast to absorb the nutrients, then use an enzyme to deactivate the yeast, which is then considered a digestible food that is converted to a vitamin pill. It's an industrial process overall. To be accurate, I called Megafood customer service to find out whether the source of their vitamins was natural or synthetic, and if synthetic, what is the chemical composition. An example would be if their B-1 vitamin component was derived from synthetic Thiamine Mononitrate, Thiamine Hydrochloride, or Benfotiamine, before being ingested by the Bakers Yeast. The reason this information is important is because there are different forms of each type of vitamin and mineral, some easily absorbed and higher quality, and some of much lower quality that are not as easy to absorb into your body system. The response I received from MegaFood customer service was that the source of their nutrients are proprietary (meaning that you have no idea what chemicals you are ingesting). I was informed that MegaFood would not release their vitamin nutrient source but that it "might be" published in the future. I was then informed that the source of the nutrients may or may not be synthetic. The problem I have with MegaFood is a lack of transparency. I want to know exactly what I am spending my money on and exactly what I am digesting into my body. When a manufacturer tells me their product is partially "proprietary", especially a food/medical product, then it's time to send my business elsewhere. And to be fair, MegaFood supplement products do contain some levels of fruits and seeds that are disclosed on their labels. But, if you look at the MegaFood website, promotional videos, and literature, one is led to believe that the vitamin you are taking is crushed and dried vegetables. I have a really big problem with this type of advertising. I am rating this product two stars due to the exaggerated "fresh from farm to tablet" marketing and their lack of transparency with the ingredient list. In the end, I personally do not consider a yeast based tablet a farm to tablet whole food vitamin. I purchase online almost daily and rely on other reviews to guide me to smart purchases. I write both positive and negative reviews, as can be witnessed from my review history, based on my experience. [...]
