Don't Buy - Not Ready to Be Sold to the Public Yet (Latest Update 9/17/14)
I pre-ordered Trax as a way to locate my autistic son if wanders away. I looked into all kinds of tracking devices, and Trax sounded like the most well thought-out of all the options. I received it a few days ago, and I'm sorry to say that it just doesn't work yet. If you check out the Trax Support Portal (https://traxfamily.zendesk.com) you can see that a lot of Trax customers are having serious problems with the Trax device. It seems like the Trax product team is working on improvements to the Trax tracker's firmware and mobile apps, but this seems to be an alpha-stage product at best right now (a beta product should at least be functionally complete). It is far too unreliable to use as a tracking mechanism for my son at this point.
I'm going to hold on to my Trax for now in hopes that the Trax team makes some quick updates to the product to get it working. I will write updates to this review as improvements are made (or not made).
The biggest disappointment is that Trax is not being honest on its Website or in their marketing materials about what stage this product is in and that the product basically doesn't work yet. If they would be transparent with their customers, they would find out very quickly that we would support them in the creation of this product. I know a lot of families with autistic children that really want them to succeed.
Review Update 7/27/14 -- Improved, but not reliable at all still. There have been several updates to the Trax firmware (none to the iPhone app). While the basic tracking has improved and gotten more accurate, it still just stops tracking randomly. The product is still not reliable at all. I'm no longer bullish on this product. In short -- DO NOT BUY.
Review Update 8/10/14 -- The device has not improved at all since my last update on 7/27/14. It constantly loses its GPS connection and randomly stops tracking. To top it all off, the device now seems to brick itself sometimes when I try to turn it off - the red LED comes on and won't turn off, so I have the let the battery die, and then recharge it before I can use it again. It's time the Trax team offers all owners of Trax a refund and apology for marketing a product that doesn't provide basic functionality. Again -- DO NOT BUY.
Review Update 9/17/14 -- Have continued to test Trax and the best that I can say is that it has become more consistent in its failures. The biggest issue is that it occasionally just stops tracking for long periods of time (sometimes hours), and then it will suddenly start tracking again. I'm usually alerted that it has started tracking again by the multiple mobile notifications I receive from the iPhone app when it starts working again. I have received hundreds of speed tracking notifications from the app even though I have speed tracking notifications turned OFF in the app. I also still have the issue when I try to turn off Trax and it freezes with the red LED on. I typically have to just keep pushing the on/off switch until it snaps out of this mode (it's inconsistent on how to do remedy this issue). I'll continue to test Trax occasionally, but I have not seen any substantial improvement in performance, and have pretty much given up on Trax at this point. Total waste of $250. Again -- DO NOT BUY.
