Watch the video. I received the DCD996B for Christmas and it failed right out of the box holding the chuck with my bare hand on all torque settings. My son-in-law recently purchased a DCD996 (no "B") and it does EXACTLY the same thing. Basically, the variable speed control design is defective and the only thing you can depend on is full speed, which can be dangerous with this drill. You have NO control. I tried running a scissor jack or driving a screw in a controlled fashion and it was impossible. I assumed must my unit was defective and returned my drill, then purchased one from another source (Amazon). This one failed in exactly the same way as in the video. It fails the same with all my batteries, which are different sizes and from different sources. It is all 996 models. Everyone should try your other models and make sure it does not do this as well. Shame on you Dewalt for releasing your flagship drill without properly testing it. I have been using nothing but Dewalt cordless tools for the past 25 years and I have now lost faith in the brand.
