Not near as fast as a skillet, but it gets the job done without the hassle of having to mind the stovetop while preparing more sandwiches. I got mine just yesterday, and so I've only used it once - so I can't speak on the longevity of the item just yet. I like my sandwiches a bit on the brown side, and had to set it to the highest "melt" level - and then still had to toast them twice. But, the american and swiss melted GREAT and the sandwiches were DELICIOUS! The sandwich racks work well with little to no mess. The box advertises that it can do grilled ham and cheese also, and I wouldn't be surprised if those turn out great as well. The racks aren't going to allow you to get too imaginative with your creations, because they need to keep the sandwich pulled tight without the contents spilling out. Assuming that this new appliance can stand the test of time, I am going to get a lot of use out of it. For grilled cheese lovers, and at this price tag - this is a BUY. EDIT: Not a buy. It did NOT stand the test of time. After just a week, the heating element began to have a short in it, and you could only stand there and hold the lever down to get it to cook. And about two uses after that, it quit working entirely. I threw it in the garbage and will look at another brand.
