Had Verilux disclosed that you have to be 8-10" from this light in order to acheive 5,000 lux (on Amazon, no on the box after you purchase it), I am pretty sure I would have spent the extra money for a better option. On the side of the box it states 5,000 lux at 8-10'' and 10,000 lux at 4-6" (see picture below of side of box). Get a ruler and measure that distance from your eyes, not very realistic to have a bright light so incredibly close to your eyes...also if your sitting that close I have to wonder of any long term effects on the eyes. I have used it now for 4 days. As others have mentioned, their is a screw or something lose that rolls around but aside from that, the heat that it eventually generates comes from the back and bottom so as you sit close enough to it, you should not notice any real heat emitting off from it. It is compact, I would NOT recommend for therapy but for someone just needing a nice little lamp. You get what you pay for..lesson learned. If you don't suffer from depression or SAD too much maybe you will be okay with sitting uncomfortably close toward the light. After 4 days I feel no different with the exception of having a stronger feeling of, buyer's remorse. Unfortunately, I will look at a better light and will avoid a company that is misleading as Verilux.
