Seemed like a good idea
This drive seems like a good idea. There are almost no thunderbolt drives on the market, yet Apple thinks this is the 'best' connection method for external devices. I have a MacBook that has Thunderbolt and USB 2.0, so this drive sounded like it would be a perfect fit. After I received the drive, I partitioned it so I could use 1/2 for backup, and 1/2 to share files between MAC and Windows. After 4 months, and burning my fingers on the Thunderbolt Cable, the thunderbolt controller blew up, and corrupted the FAT32 partition so it was no longer recognizable on PC or Mac. I contacted LaCie Support, and after 2 WEEKS of asking for support, they finally responded. Unfortunately for me, I have to send the drive back at my expense, and then wait an additional 2 weeks for LaCie to either repair or replace my drive. I'm terribly disappointed in this expensive product that performed terribly, caused me issues, including attempting to get support for a 4 month old drive. No one likes getting burned, physically or financially. There aren't many products out there, but you may want to consider another brand that has a USB-Thundebolt adapter for it's modular drives. Another Update. Today is 7/9. Finally received a contact from 'Silver' support. They suggested that I troubleshoot my broken drive myself, in an email, to determine where the problem is. Remember the ticket was opened on 6/19, I've already done as much troubleshooting as I can with my broken, corrupted drive, and I am still 2-3 weeks out from a fixed drive. I did take my MBP to the Apple store, and determined that the Thunderbolt Controller on the MBP is in tact and functional. LaCie provided a bad cable with the drive, and this is what caused the problem. Note that LaCie didn't offer to troubleshoot the cable, as they don't talk to me, however, the Apple Store DID do this, without question, and figured out in moments that LaCie provided a bad cable. However, it is not possible to discuss this with LaCie, as they do not respond to Technical Support inquiries for WEEKS, and when they do, they send you in technical support loops, to prevent you from actually getting service. In LaCie's defense, they did ask me to try another Thunderbolt cable, but since I only have the one that came with the drive, and an additional one is $30, I don't feel it is a reasonable expectation of LaCie that I would have another cable lying around, or expect me to fork out more money to test it, to prove that my drive is broken, or the cable that came with the drive is inferior. I thought that posting the experience I've had with LaCie on Amazon would catch their attention. Apparently they are so unaware of their terrible customer service, they don't bother reading the review for their own products on one of the largest resellers on earth's website. It's LaCie's loss, and I hope i can convince others to steer clear of this inferior company.
