Don't let the star rating fool you, that was before the update
The entire tablet (kids edition, ha!) has been messed up by a horrible Freetime setup. Who ever thought of this must not have any dealings with children under 15. Freetime is supposed to be fun and entertaining for kids and not this frustrating and sending them into meltdowns. My son is (almost)3 and was pretty autonomous on his tablet, where he only had access to the developmental apps/videos I've downloaded for him. He is a brilliant little autistic boy, who is very curious and wants to learn, but is non-verbal, and it's frustrating for him to ask for things, because he doesn't know how. The autonomy he had on his tablet to switch between the selected apps how he pleased increased his focus and learning (sparing us all of meltdowns). I wanted to give him a bigger tablet as we just started the ABC mouse and thought it would be easier for him to learn more advanced stuff on a bigger screen. But this freetime setup is HORRIBLE!!!!! - EVERYTHING is mangled together, thousands upon thousands of apps, that he (and probably any other kid) will just tap away and download in huge batches. If you turn the wifi off, the downloaded apps don't play well. - Can't find any of his regular apps, lost in the sea of "recommended, recent, added for you, favorites, books, videobla, bla, bla categories) - It's not even possible to pin the FAVORITES page so a child would stay on the page of apps you've selected for him/her. - it's not even possible to manually organize the apps within the category according to preference. (like it is on the adult profile) It's a headache for me to navigate through all that, let a lone a child. I simply can not believe that this "idea" went trough proper testing for user friendliness and was approved????? If I'd known all this, I definitely would not purchase. I don't see many kids handling this frustration-free and without constant parent supervision, which kind of defeats the purpose of Freetime. The name seems ironic now, as it's not free time for kids or parents anymore with the current setup.
