Just gets worse and worse -
I have used Paperport since version 1 when it came bundled with my sheetfeed scanner. Since then I have upgraded the scanner and the software several times. The most recent version that I used consistently was ver 9 professional. It was OK but much more sluggish than previous versions with a tendency to crash my system on an occasional basis...but was useful enough and I had enough time invested using it that I put up with it for about 3 years. Since then Scansoft either sold out to Nuance or was otherwise incorporated into it. I decided to try the upgrade to version 11 prof and as soon as I loaded it there were some problems. When I went to the website to look for solutions I realized ver 12 was already out so I called them and asked if I could upgrade since I had only purchased the product the day before. Nope. They said I would just have to purchase the full upgrade. Idiotic policy. Luckily my bookstore was much more understanding and agreed to upgrade me for free. So I loaded version 12. I hoped it would be faster. Nope. In fact, just to drag a file from one folder to another would take about 25 seconds!! I thought this can't be right so I called Nuance. After a long wait I spoke with a tech support person who was not very knowledgeable about the product. He said I had too many files in the folder! I said that shouldn't make any difference -- ver 9 took about 1 second to drag a file - why does version 12 take 25 seconds??? (It is the same file structure/files I was using with version 9). I asked if there was some indexing function going on that I could turn off that was in the background or something else going on -- DUH? was about the only response I could get from him. He was no help. While trying to mess around with it myself over the next day I realized my whole system had become incredibly unstable and would frequently lock up with 100% CPU resources by the PDF viewer which was apparently trying to turn all my pdf's into indexed files -- hogging all the resources of the system without waiting for down time or asking me or even being able to turn it off without going into msconfig and just turning off the processes. Well that's real helpful. There is a lot of other background crap going on (and I have a fast system with lots of memory that I use for mathematical modeling) -- this crappy software is off my system. I haven't decided if I will reload ver 9 -- I am looking for alternatives. Stay away from NUANCE and don't trash your system!
