I own a small law firm. We have been using Square for a couple of years. Thought we'd give Amazon a try, especially given the promotional fee discount. Many of our transactions are manual as clients call in deposits to their trust accounts by phone. Well, after a week of not seeing any deposits after having charged several thousand dollars, I called Amazon. Turns out that manually entered transactions are held for, wait for it, FOURTEEN DAYS in a reserve account. Square does not do that. This is a HUGE issue for a small firm. I called customer service and was told Amazon is aware that it is not entirely clear that the manually entered transactions are held in a reserve account for 14 days. But that the information is "buried in the help pages." REALLY? I am one who usually does not venture into the help section of a website UNTIL there is a problem. Not in advance of one. The first level customer service person told me that even a supervisor cannot get the money released to us short of the 14 days. She told me, "That is the way the computer program is designed." I insisted on speaking to a supervisor, anyway. Herbie, the supervisor, was very helpful. True that he could not flip a switch to help me. However, he did tell me he can send a request to the Accounts department to have our hold time reviewed and hopefully shortened. Well, what do you know? In any case, through this process I also learned that manually entered transactions are not eligible for the transaction fee discount anyway, so I am going back to Square where I've never in two years had a single problem. (Yes, I am a lawyer and should have read the fine print, however, in my eagerness to give Amazon our business since all my other experiences with Amazon have been stellar, I skipped the fine print. Shame on me.) I guess you get what you pay for.
