An Insult to Police Women- and readers
I finished this dreadful book just to see if it ever improved. It didn't. The writing was no better than the average high school kid, and there were plenty of grammar mistakes - something I don't normally fuss about too much if the story is decent. Alicia Friend is a 32 year old woman who thinks that her incurable cuteness is special - everyone falls in love with her, she says. She is stupid, stupid, stupid - even if she was 15, which she seems to think she is - she would be stupid. She claims that her brain is like some fantastic computer, but she ends up sleeping with a murderer and her genius brain never reveals anything worthwhile in solving the case.. Her male counterpart might just as well not exist in the book at all, since cute Alicia, at 32 years old and going in to work wearing her hair in pigtails. does all the hard brain work. There are sections such as when she's interviewing and ex detective named Wellington, and she insists on calling him "Welly" even though he objects, because she can, because she's so cute - also because she has no respect for her job or for anyone else- she smiles at a crime scene, because she should because that's what she feels like doing and why should anyone steal her happy self. Seriously, she refuses to go into work when called because she's just about to get into the sack with the murderer and if she doesn't do it right away, they'll feel awkward later. Who tells their boss, go find someone else, and gets away with it. And in all the author's efforts to make miz cutsie into a tough investigator, all that was created was an arrogant and cruel character. It was a struggle to get through, and I truly do not understand the many praises for this book at all. I for one, detested her and certainly didn't 'fall in love' with her in the beginning or the end.
