I wanted to give other animal lovers a warning that I wish I had before I bought this book. It is a slight SPOILER - it happens early on in the book so it doesn't give much away but stop reading if you don't want to know anything. Here's your warning: a puppy dies a horrible death towards the beginning of this book. I have to stop reading it and I will forever curse it because I can't get it out of my head. The rest of the things that happen are also horrible and I would have probably stopped reading it anyways but this is what decided it. I think it was totally unnecessary to the story but to be fair, I think the author really, REALLY wants you to hate the villain of the story.
