If only I could give this a zero-star rating...
This is not memory foam; this is not even high-density foam. This is foam that is covered with an cloth enclosure that is nice enough but seems to serve the main purpose of concealing this is a knock-off--a dreadfully over-priced knock-off. I depend on memory foam and have purchased several toppers over the years. I spent two hours pouring over reviews in preparation of company arriving for the holidays before purchasing this memory foam topper. Judging from the reviews, I'm suspecting that this was the genuine article in the past, and then the Chinese manufacturer decided to pursue increased profits. Know how it takes about 24 hours for a memory foam mattress to fully expand after you are finally able to unroll it? This was vacuum-packed, so problems weren't immediately apparent, but I noted that it unrolled with no difficulty, and within 30 minutes, it was fully expanded. As for their insert stating that the odor was benign? One of the worst I've had. Despite the cold weather here, I had to open the house for 20 minutes to help dissipate the odor after my eyes watered, nose run, and headache pounded. I'm preparing to begin the return process, though how I'm supposed to roll this back up to fit inside the box without an industrial vacuum-packer is a mystery.
Update: Mystery solved... I was not able to repack it, so I'm reluctantly keeping it. In follow up, after deciding to keep it, I placed it outside on a sheet of large plastic to air throughout the day and removed the zipper-encasing cover to hasten the off-gassing process and machine-washed the cover. I saw then that what I was feeling initially was the 1-1/4" of plain foam, whereas on the opposite side, there is barely 2" of low-quality memory foam. The two sides are glued together totaling a thickness of ~3-1/4" after having been laid flat for 24 hours. This was exactly the design I'd chosen to avoid after reading numerous reviews. In summary, I paid $120 (full size) for 2" of mediocre memory foam containing more formaldehyde than a funeral parlor--hardly the not-harmful low-odor 4" advertised. My primary regret in not being able to return this item is I feel I'm rewarding corporate greed and dishonesty. Photo included.
