Once A Superb Salmon Oil No Longer A Wise Choice
Salmon oil is an excellent supplement for your beloved furry family members - we've been using it for years as an addition to our Old English Bulldogs diet with great results Providing of course, it's a safe high quality product. When I originally wrote a five star review for Iceland Pure I was swayed by a few factors to try this brand. First was the bold claim on their web site that all their Salmon was "Wild Caught" far off into the freezing and cleanest waters left on earth.
This was important to all of us because the potential hazards of Farm raised Salmon, fed with growth hormone rich manufactured pellet food and just as bad if not worse mass doses of antibiotics - make this choice no second fiddle to the risk you take with mercury levels when considering wild caught salmon.
But Iceland Pure had a compelling response on their site for this too.
Not only was their Salmon
1) Wild Caught
2) Cold Pressed (for a scent free product)
In addition they proudly explained in great detail how each "batch" was tested for Mercury and other toxins and the results provided by an independent Laboratory could always be found right on their web site. I thought this was sensational - I remember wishing seafood meant for human consumption had this much care and safeguards The USDA doesn't monitor or regulate seafood, - in fact no regulatory agency does. Seafood lovers? we're left on our own.
We can make the best informed decision we can for our pets.. When I went back to look at the Iceland Pure site recently it wasn't just that the look of the creative was significantly different that had one of my eyebrows now near the back of my head. It was the bold claim that their Salmon was Farm Raised with a list of "Fluffy"meaningless and empty arguments as to why this was better and worse, far worse - instead of the Salmon they now purchased from wholesalers being tested by batch - it was being tested every year to three years.
Good Bye Iceland Pure!
I have no clue whether they were bought out or caught in a lie and forced by some international trade association to make good on an empty and misleading promise and frankly I don't care to invest the hours it would take to piece such significant changes together and root out the cause. In this house when it comes to our dogs we only care that we're doing the best we can when it comes to their well being.
So with that said, I won't be using Iceland Pure any longer. It may be fine - it may not be fine I only know thing at the time of this writing and that's my dogs won't end up the guinea pigs used to find that out.
The benefits of fish oils are well known.
Rich in the essential Omega 3 oils including DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) DHA is a naturally produced fatty Omega acid that's been proven to hold a powerhouse of health benefits - including :
* Healthier Heart and a preventative to heart disease
* Renal health and a time proven aid against kidney failure and disease
* Brain health
* Immune system enhancement
* Joint health and reduction of inflammation
At this point I'm looking into Human grade Krill oils and maybe like virtually everything else in their diet we'll find the quality and highest degree of safety we can find is in choosing products made for humans and processed for humans. Pet foods and supplements regardless of claims and marketing propaganda are made from sub par ingredients in sub par processing plants. These factories and the products they produce aren't accountable to anyone. AAFCO is a non regulatory association the never inspect plants nor do they hold manufacturers accountable -- we are on our own.
