Problematic Engineering or Execution
Unboxing: Nicely packaged and looks good on the table. The canteen cover is a tan digital camoflage. Just the ticket for your deployment to Afganistan or Iraq. Not too many campers and hikers there. Not much good for the Pacific Northwest.
The metal components look to be top notch. The first thing I noticed when opening the canteen top is that it's a stopper, not a cap, and has a coarse thread. A fine thread let's you crank down with pressure, a coarse thread does not. The second thing I notice is that (EPIC FAIL #1) the silicon o-ring falls out. Lose that and the water sloshes all over you when in motion. There is no spare o-ring included.
The canteen cup appears to be top quality and fits the canteen quite well. The handles are quite thin, but should hold up ok as they are titanium.
When placing the canteen and cup in the cover, it takes quite a bit of pushing and rocking to get things in there. Getting the cup out takes two hands as well. There is a pocket inside the cover for the cup top. The cover has two molle compatible straps to hold onto a pack. The snaps do not have a solid "snap" to them leaving you unsure if it's secure. It's not a good place to go cheap on materials. I would not recommend using this on a belt loop as the straps are designed for a double molle attachment and who among us wears a 4 inch belt.
The real problem comes with the design/implementation of the cover (EPIC FAIL #2). After you place the canteen and cup in the cover, the top strap comes up over one inch short and you are unable to engage the clasp. The "y" or yoke portion of the strap will not fit over the sides of the canteen top, with or without the stopper in place. Leaving the cup out does not change this, nor does rotating the canteen 180.
Conclusion: Unless you are going to keep the canteen unfilled and inside your pack, I can't recommend the canteen set. I was just looking at the back of the box. Made in China. 'Nuff said.
