In Alaska, you outsmart it... or die.
This is a well made feeder. BUT..... if an item doesn't do what you're paying for, it's useless. Consequently, it makes this an expensive, useless feeder. After using it for several weeks I'm not sure how it gets so many positive reviews. Also, I did not receive an "all metal" feeder. The squirrel has already started chewing on the plastic bottom in an effort to reach the seeds ......... little stinker. Maybe they just grow bigger, more creative squirrels and birds in Alaska. This feeder is a COMPLETE FAILURE, with regards to keeping out larger birds or squirrels. Why....because both have found a way to grasp the side of the sliding panel, bottom edge of the feeder or rain guard, to prevent the sliding panel from dropping or to simply by pass it. Birds manage to grip it, and snarf away. Or, with some difficulty, land on the perch and fill their bellies. Even when a larger bird lands on the perch, the "door" doesn't close enough to prevent them from eating their fill and no way to adjust for weight. Squirrels grip the small rain guard, sorta hang upside down, and just fill those little cheeks to bursting. But, if they're that smart, I guess they've earned a good meal. And, to maintain the integrity of the gene pool, it is the smart ones we want reproducing. But, since this feeder has ... FAILED COMPLETELY ... at keeping out larger birds and squirrels, I can't recommend it. Not as a large bird/squirrel proof feeder anyway. PS... not to worry. There's feeders and platforms full of goodies for squirrels and bigger birds. I just want a feeder that won't let them go through pounds of hulled sunflower hearts every hour or two.
