Simply a Poor Collection
Those of us who were teenagers during the Sixties were very lucky because of the great, and in some cases, timeless music we experienced. But this ain’t it. Most of the songs in this collection come from the early Sixties; and some, like Puppet on a String and Walking Back to Happiness, are hardly memorable. Some of the music is memorable but hardly the best, such as I Got You Babe by Sonny and Cher, and Daydream Believer by the Monkeys. And some of the choices are weird, like Summertime by The Zombies, which got virtually no airtime. Almost anything by the Zombies would have been a better choice. That said, most of the best music from the Sixties is missing; such as Bus Stop by the Hollies, Summer in the City by the Lovin Spoonful, Macarthur Park by Richard Harris. There’s no Donovan, no Supremes, no Four Tops, no Byrds, no Petula Clark, No Righteous Brothers, no Doors and no Who. The “British Invasion” is virtually ignored: e.g. Beatles, Stones, Dave Clark 5, Cream. And the San Francisco bands are completely ignored: Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company, Moby Grape, Beau Brummels, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Santana, Steve Miller Band, It’s a Beautiful Day, etc. I can’t imagine what the criteria for this “Simply the Best…” collection, but I’m guessing that whoever put it together was Simply not there in the Sixties. And in any case, he, she or they Simply got it wrong.
