I understand--and can clarify--what others are saying.
UPDATE: IT BROKE after moderate use.
==============
Having traveled in Japan, I understand and can explain the issues with those who say it hurt their feet. What that means is their feet needed it more.
This is a "pressure point" massager. In Japan and Korea, massages are not for relaxation but for therapy. They are strong and tend to hurt. But they do lasting good. After your feet start to get better, it hurts less and you want it even stronger.
That is where the problems come with this product.
First: I agree with the others that there is no real control over the massage. It is pretty much on or off. But having experienced oriental massage, I am happy with the monochrome experience--it may not have variety but what you get is authentic, much more like a human massage than other machines I have tried.
Second: I am concerned about problems with reliability others expressed. The item did not work or broke soon and customer service was poor. Those reviews are the only reason I did not order three more immediately upon experiencing the massage it delivers. I will give mine a thorough test drive--I tend to use it several hours a day at my desk. If it proves durable for six months, I will order the others, ascribing the 10% failure rate to a high level of flukes and relying on Amazon's return window of 30 days.
UPDATE: After several months of high usage, is working fine. I recommend it. It seems the failures all occur early and you can exchange, but when you get one that works it works well.
Also, I find a valuable feature is that the front end is not closed. Thus, you can position your foot to focus anywhere you want. And you can press your foot down or keep it lightly touching the massage surface to allow gradual adjustment to a strong massage.
In the end, the lack of control for variety in the remote and the unit itself can be overcome simply by how you position your own foot. Went from four stars to five.
