A Legacy Product Ruined: RIP 2012 Neutrogena Rainbath
Back in 2009, Neutrogena changed the scent and color of original Rainbath, making it darker, and the fragrance less sophisticated. For months, Neutrogena denied making any changes, but offered overcompensatingly liberal refunds (they sent me a check for $20 and another $40 of coupons for a $15 product). Eventually they did admit they'd changed the formula. The new product was still tolerable - and better than the alternatives. Since the body wash still cleaned well while leaving my skin soft and the scent didn't offend, I decided to stick with it. Recently I brought home a new 40 ouncer, and in the shower these past several days, I noticed some new changes, none for the better. 1. It doesn't lather well. I use Neutrogena as shampoo and body wash, as I have for nearly 20 years. Suddenly with this new bottle, I noticed my hands dragging roughly across my hair. The gel wasn't lathering, and it didn't have the slippery quality that it used to have. As I continued to bathe, I noticed that the product didn't lather well, and required more scrubbing to create what lather it did create. I had to use more to get enough lather, more than twice as much as before. 2. It dries out my skin. My skin looks and feels dry, scaly and rough after about a week of this bottle's Rainbaths. My skin is getting worse each day. I considered the possibility that my municipal water had changed, and/or my skin had changed. But a different shower gel (Every Man Jack) leaves my skin soft, and it lathers easily - tried it again yesterday. Then I remembered I had some of an old bottle of Neutrogena Rainbath in a travel bag. So I tried it this evening, and the old stuff lathers easily and leaves my skin soft. I'm sure gonna miss it. I've done enough testing. Given Neutrogena's previous tinkering with the product, I have no doubts that they've done it again, creating a cheap shadow of a previously high quality body wash while treating their loyal customers like fools. There are surprisingly few well priced and appealing shower gels out there. But if I have to, I'll bathe with Suave. Looks like my Neutrogena days are truly over.
