★★☆☆☆
For birding photography, too fuzzy
I don't usually write reviews, but I just returned this lens. I was using it primarily for amateur bird photography, but I personally found it was not sharp enough to use on a regular basis. I have a Nikon D3300 Camera, and already use a Nikon 55-300mm VR lens. I was hoping this lens would be an improvement on the 55-300mm lens, but the results were too fuzzy and required impeccable settings to nail a shot. On the 55-300mm lens, I can put it on "running man mode" or a basic manual aperture of 7 and the camera will adapt to decent quality whether the bird flies in the shade or flies out onto a sunny fence post --I always got sharp shots. Not the case with this lens, any automatic setting resulted in extreme fuzziness for me. Plus I wasn't convinced the results were even a full 33% closer on the 400m compared to the Nikon 55-300mm lens, it felt more like this lens was 350mm, not 400mm. This lens did perform well at F11 and a steady hand, and if you don't need to zoom into your photos at all it performs well. However for my needs of walking around with a lens and being able to take a quick action shot, and crop the photo on the the subject, it did not perform at all. I don't like writing negative reviews, and it's it's possible I just wasn't using the settings correctly, but I wouldn't recommend this lens for wildlife or action photography. See the two photos below of an example of the photo quality --not quite sharp enough for me to spend $600. Hope this review was helpful!
