Suffers from 2 major design flaws, Not Recommended
"Honey, look, there is a knock box that matches our espresso machine! It'll look good next to the Breville toaster oven too." Don't do it. Sure, it looks right, nice brushed stainless steel look, logo appropriately placed....don't do it. This knock box suffers from two major design flaws: 1) The bar that runs across the top (for the knocking) is too high, which means that coffee grounds often splatter upon impact, unless your coffee puck is nearly completely dry. We had to put a small vinyl placemat across the back to prevent this. Most knock boxes that work well have a larger dip in the front, so when the knocking starts, the coffee grounds stay in the box. This one looks good, but doesn't perform that function well. 2) The polymer they used to make the bar with is easily dented. On the Mohs hardness scale, this would probably be a 2, while your stainless steel filter holder is probably a 6. When a 6 impacts with a 2, the 2 is dented or scratched. That's what happened the first time I started knocking; a small divot in the bar. So, I tried some workarounds, such as tapping it on the side, letting the puck completely dry, and I managed to minimize the denting. But, this is a terrible strategy long-term. I've resolved to simply replace this when the bar is completely pockmarked, and never buy a Breville knock box again. Do yourself a favor and avoid this item; save your thirty bucks for one with a padded steel crossbar.
