Unethical
Whilst there are a few people who have managed to keep these spheres active for more than 20 years, that isn’t the norm. Under acceptable conditions, these organisms, formally known as Halocaridina rubra and also known as Opae ula or Hawaiian Red Shrimp, can survive for approximately 20 years. In these so-called “ecospheres” they are expected to live for only 2-3 years. That is 10%-15% of their normal lifespan under acceptable conditions. That isn’t a coincidence. It‘s animal abuse. To put this into perspective, let’s say that the average life expectancy for humans worldwide is 100, which is far higher than the actual average life expectancy for humans worldwide (72.6 years as of 2019 according to the United Nations). Continuing with this hypothetical situation, the average life expectancy for humans worldwide is 100 and there is a new housing unit being advertised as completely self-sufficient and low maintenance. However, whilst some individuals have managed to live a full life in these homes, most perished after 10-15 years and a substantial amount of inhabitants have perished in even less time than that. Would you want to live in that house?
