Not For Serious Woodworkers
I bought this planer in October of 2107. It replaced a Delta 22-540 I had owned for over 20 years. Here's the good, the bad and the ugly. The finish this planer leaves behind is almost flawless. That's the good. The bad is the knives dull very quickly. The ugly is this can bog down the planer and cause the motor overload to trip right in the middle of a board. I was planing 4/4 walnut 8" wide. I had just installed fresh knives. Each pass only 1/64". Pretty slow going. During the third pass on (3) 8' long boards, the overload tripped, again. This was the third time in two hours using the planer. Depending on where the handle on the wheel is, the head of the planer can drop due to vibration. Once I realized this was happening, I jammed a wood wedge in the wheel to keep it from moving. But the overload keeps tripping even taking less than 1/100" per pass. In 20 years with the Delta, I never had any of these problems. Tomorrow I'm sending it to Dewalt while it's still under warranty. Hopefully they can fix the tripping, stop the head from dropping and see if there's a bad motor in it. And this thing is LOUD!!! I measured 126 db while planing a 3" wide maple board. Ear plugs and muffs together make the noise tolerable. But dust pickup is excellent. Some owners install a Shelix cutterhead but that's another $400. You can buy a pretty decent used floor model for the price of this thing and the Shelix. If you're a serious woodworker, I wouldn't recommend this planer.
