The Spoiler Filled Reason Why You Shouldn't Buy This Book
WARNING THIS BOOK WAS NOT WRITTEN BY JK ROWLING - DON'T BUY THIS BOOK
Well to start I don't know how the hell Rowling let this thing get made into a play or why she had someone else right it when she should be writing every single chronicle in the Wizarding World Canon, and it's because of this that many people probably don't consider this canon. Then the painful truth is this book shouldn't be considered canon for the franchise. While I'm rambling about it this book does nothing that the epilogue setup, yes it has the first scene where it's almost copy pasted but WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU SETUP THE BOOK IN THE ENTIRELY WRONG WAY. Thanks to some chats I had with friends at like 4 in the Morning after reading this we all agreed on a few key plot points that would've made this book much better (spoiler warning):
1) Albus should've been selected for Griffindor but had to go through the same identity crisis thing that Harry went through in the second book to better show the relationship between Harry and Albus (also this would've allowed for better development of the potter family as well as some of the side characters
2) Rose Granger-Weasley shouldn't have been just a do it all character, she falls flat in the play because she doesn't have insecurities like literally everybody else in the play, she just comes off as this God like student that despite her parents flaws she has literally nothing to be afraid of. This would've also given Rose a chance to become part of whatever the hell the theme was for this book
3) Time Turners that go back more then an hour, are you serious...THERE ARE SO MANY PLOT HOLES BECAUSE JACK F****** THRONE DECIDED HE WAS GOING TO USE F****** TIME TURNERS THAT CAN ACTUALLY GO BACK IN TIME MORE THEN A COUPLE OF HOURS! This is probably the biggest flaw of the play that hinders it so much in the long run (but there are a bunch of other things that are on par with this). Literally 5/8 of the play revolves around the Time Traveling aspect, which in my opinion Jack Throne just watched Back to the Future and called it good on his time travel research. The whole aspect follows Albus, Scorpious, and the new Character Delphi as they try to save Cedric's life during Harry's 4th Year in order to fulfill Delphi's goal of bringing back the Dark Lord...BUT WHY THE HELL WOULD IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE TIMELINE IF DIGGORY WAS NOT KILLED, HE WOULD'VE FOUGHT VOLDEMORT WITH HARRY AT THE CEMETERY OR JUST STAYED BEHIND AND FOUGHT WITH HARRY IN HIS 5TH AGAINST UMBRIDGE AND AT THE BATTLE OF HOGWARTS! and the worst part about all of this is...THAT THE BOOK EVEN SAYS THAT THE TWO IMPORTANT MOMENTS IN THE TIMELINE ARE NEVEL VS. NIGINI AND VOLDEMORT TRYING TO KILL HARRY AS A CHILD SO WHY THE HELL DOES DELPHI, THE MAIN VILLAN, WANT TO SAVE CEDRICS LIFE IF THAT MEANS HARRY COULD HAVE ANOTHER FRIEND TO HELP HIM! Now there are a few cameos in the script by Amos Diggory asking to see his son again, which makes no since because in the 4th book onward Amos accepted his son's fate and wanted to support Harry from far away because he couldn't stand knowing he had seen his son die. Anyway the last thing I have to say about the time travel thing is that it was completely thrown in at the last minute and wasn't developed at all in the way it should've been (like in the 3rd book) (Also there was other stuff I should've mentioned about Time travel and the other time lines but that is like an essay on its own because everything is so bad so just don't bother trying to understand it)
4) How, when the book is called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, do you mess up the original Harry Potter crew so badly! This just makes me so sad to see the characters wasted on such a horrible idea. Harry's character is a rough mix between Adult Harry and like 5th Year Harry. And if you want to know something super interesting Jack paraphrased scenes from the original books into the play that aren't set in the past but just put into a new scenario, try to find them all I guess. Anyway, Harry's actions reflect that of him in his 5th year, yet his voice in the words on the play sounds so adultish bland if that was a color. Jack, you ruined one of the best characters of the 21st Century. Hermione doesn't carry any of the traits she had from the original books over, she just kinda repeats what everyone says and is a horrible Minister of Magic. Ron ironically has the most interesting and funny scenes of the play (he wasn't even in the scene mind you) where he sends a Comb to James which turns his hair pink when he combs it, that got a chuckle out of me I'll admit it. Then comes Draco who is just an egotistical prick all the time, for some reason even though he shouldn't be. Also we have an appearance from Snape, whose character got washed out but is nice to see that he is still the good guy under all of that Snape that we know and love (just saw Alan Rickman in my head playing this Snape and it made me kinda sad). Dumbledore is here too, but it's not the bad ass movie Dumbledore, it's the I'm kinda goofy Dumbledore from the books and he is there to give Harry parenting advice from experiences...he had...with...Harry..? Did Jack even read the last book? You do realize that Dumbledore used Harry as a way to kill the Dark Lord despite what would've happened to Harry. And he didn't really care it was just raising him like a pig to the slaughter. Also where is the Professor Snape portrait cause I wanna see that too.
5) Then the biggest notable problem with this whole book...Albus. Albus is such a dry unrelateable piece of literary garbage. He literally is on his period throughout the entire book and takes all his anger out on his dad for...putting...him...in...Slytherin..? Why is he mad about that. And do you know what's so funny it's not at all, freakin Scorpio is more like Harry and much more entertaining then Albus even comes close too. The book goes through like 3 years and then the beginning of his fourth year at Hogwarts. I'm just so sad that they ruined a character I was genuinely excited to see.
Well, in conclusion, Rowling if you are out there. Happy Birthday btw, but more importantly don't let other people write your stories for you. You should be the one and only person to do so if this catastrophe has taught the fans anything. I mean there is a part of me that wants Jack to shoot himself for the giant big mistake that he created in the form of this screenplay. But hey, you only had 9 years to make an actually good sequel to the Harry Potter series and it probably should've been 10. So don't buy this book, because it is so awful and you are better off just not experiencing this Tarnish to an otherwise amazing series.
