What a mess!
I bought the Visually Impaired bundle for my elderly mother who is in a nursing home. She of course can barely see and misses reading very much so I thought this was great that Amazon had something to fill this need. When I bought the bundle I didn't realize that I had to specify that I wanted the 3g included…it didn’t dawn on me that they would have the Wifi only as the primary option seeing that visually impaired people would have a hard time seeing that the Wifi dropped. So I had to send the first Kindle back and order a second Kindle with 3G for $70 more, yikes. My fault on this one. Next thing that happened…I assumed (stupid me) that I would just plug in the Audio Adapter and it would be ready to go. NO!!! After more than an hour of doing everything that I could guess to do I called their help line. What they had me do was to hook up the kindle to the computer (glad I had one) go to their website (glad I had internet) and download the Audio file for Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation) then move that over to the Kindle and then restart the Kindle in a way that the Kindle would do the update. I plugged in the Audio Adapter again….Still did NOT work!!! Next morning (I’m already in to this about 3 hours) because it still doesn’t work I start to pick and click around their website trying to find anything else to try. What I found was that my brand new Kindle didn’t have software that was recent enough to work with the Audio Adapter even though my Kindle showed there were no updates. So I downloaded the update and again went thru the steps to have the Kindle recognize the updates. Then I plugged in my Audio Adapter to see if it works. YES is finally worked. Now to get it to actually read. At times I could only get it to read a word or even a letter. Urrgh. The trick seem to be that you had to put your fingers in an area that without any words, not easy on a page filled, then drag two fingers together down then up the screen. In the end I complete wish I hadn’t bought this. I can’t see my elderly non-techie mom dealing with this adapter all I can hope for is the reading glasses make it so she can see the screen on the highest font available otherwise I just wasted $200. • SO if you buy this first thing check if your Kindle’s software is version 5.7.4.1 or higher. • To do this go here: Determine Your Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation) Software Version • If you find that you do need the update go here: Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation) Software Updates. • Once you have that figured out now you need to download the VoiceView software to do this go here: Use a Kindle Audio Adapter with Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation) instruction are at the bottom. Hopefully this helpful to someone. I'll update later after my mom has had sometime with it. If Generation 8 has the VoiceView included as I have read it does then they should stop trying to sell this stupid Adapter and just sell the that Kindle to the Visually impaired. Geez!
