App requires sensitive permissions and changes to phone settings that it shouldn't!
I never got a chance to use this dash cam itself, as the app that is required to set it up and use it immediately raised red flags for me on the company's use of my data, and I refused to give it access that I didn't feel it needed.
As soon as the DDPai app was installed, it attempted to gain internet access to over a dozen Chinese IPs (red flag #1). This camera does not have GPS in it, but the DDPai app wanted access to my location (red flag #2). The app then required me to turn off the Android VPN app I use so it could connect via wifi to the dash cam, while other apps and devices I use do NOT require this (red flag #3). Finally, the app said it needed access to modify system settings with read/write access so it could ROTATE THE SCREEN properly (FINAL RED FLAG!). No way! Every other Android app I use can easily rotate its output without needing system administrator-level access.
The app to use this camera is not on the same level as a root-enabled file explorer or even the Tasker app and should not require these system-level changes to work.
While the reviews of the camera and some of the video editing capabilities of the app seemed nice, I'm not willing to give the app full control of my phone to change settings of or to download videos from a dash cam.
I attached one screenshot showing some of the IP addresses that the DDPai app was blocked from accessing by my VPN app.
