AUKEY Type-C 6-Port USB Charger with Quick Charge 3.0 & USB-C Cable completely violates the USB Type-C Spec. Do not buy it.
This is Nathan K, a Google Top Contributor program volunteer (Nexus Support Forums), and follower of Benson Leung. I analyzed AUKEY's "Type-C 6-Port USB Charger with Quick Charge 3.0 & USB-C Cable" [Model PA-Y6]. I received this unit for evaluation from Benson himself, and plan to return it to him now that I am done. This adapter does NOT comply with the USB Type-C specification version 1.2. The documentation can be found at usb.org under developers/usbtypec. The AUKEY PA-Y6 adapter violates Section 2.3.1 : "Power is not applied to the USB Type-C host or hub receptacle (VBUS or VCONN) until the DFP detects the presence of an attached device (UFP) port." In my testing, even when no UFP device is attached, this receptacle port's VBUS line is powered on at 5V. It should only be at 5V when a UFP device is present. This will result in dangerous situations when a spec-violating DFP like this is connected to any other DFP. Vbus hot is only permitted with a captive cable. Explanation located at plus.google.com at /+BensonLeung/posts/hF6b228zGvy This adapter and port violates Section 4.5.1.2.1 - Please see figure 4-5. A correct DFP receptacle must use two identical but distinct Rp resistors. According to my testing, the AUKEY charger's Type-C receptacles have a single 10kΩ resistor on both CC pins in the receptacle, which are shorted internally. "Q: In a 5V 3A or 5V 1.5A supply can I connect CC1 and CC2 and use a single shared resistor? A: No. This design fails with active cables, emarked cables or any device that requests Vconn. These cables have an Ra pulldown on one of the pins, preventing accurate detection of CC voltage if the pins are shorted at the adapter." This explanation can be found at Chromium.org under /chromium-os/cable-and-adapter-tips-and-tricks AUKEY incorrectly placed QC3.0 on the Type-C ports. Qualcomm Quick Charge at 3.6V-12V on a Type-C port is actually a violation of Type-C spec, section 4.8.2, which prohibits proprietary charging methods on Type-C connectors from changing Vbus voltage beyond 5V. Unfortunately, I do not have the equipment to test QC3, so I will not comment any further about that port. QC on Type-C is bad for a number of reasons. In situations like the above where the CC pins are also bridged, this is worse. For phones like the LeEco LeMax 2 and Moto Z that use USB-C for headphones, this combination of failures can potentially lead to the charger being detected as a headphones, a UFP device, or possibly cause damage the phone itself. This charger also burns .5W at idle when nothing is plugged in. (This is in contrast to every other wall wart which goes to 0W for Energy Star reasons.) As you are likely to leave this large a charging station plugged in all the time, it will drive up your electric bill (and hurt the environment) needlessly. In conclusion, this charger does several things that violate USB-C standards and I cannot recommend it. Please contact Benson Leung or myself if there is any more information he can provide about why these adapters are problematic. For consumers, I do not recommend buying this charger, as using this charger may cause damage to your (other) charger, hub, device, active cable, or PC USB ports.
