I just received this item and opened the box to set it up. Since this was manufactured in a low cost way, I make sure to wash every component I can to remove any contamination from the manufacturing process. I took the foam filter off of the pump unit and noticed that there appears to be solder that someone dripped onto the body of the pump. This may or may not be cause for concern, not all solder contains lead. There is a couple simple tests you can do to check, I decided to use my electronic soldering station and set it to a temperature that would melt lead based solders but wouldn't do anything to a lead-free solder(lead-free solder has a much higher melting point). Behold, it melts at the exact same temperature of common lead based solder! This implies that not only was ther accidentally lead solder on this pump, but also that it is used inside the pump. I took the pump apart as far as I could, and could not find any obvious solder where it would be exposed to the water, I cannot inspect inside the chamber underneath the pump impeller. Unless it is perfectly sealed I cannot be certain this item is safe to use. At a bare minimum, you should certainly disassemble your item like I did to make sure you are not poisoning your animals. I bought thus to get my cat to drink more water so he can be more healthy, not give him lead poisoning!
