★★☆☆☆
Good, but not great.
Just assembled the 1402 rower and wanted to post my initial assessment. The bad stuff first: - Before starting, I noticed the two halves of the plastic case, which enclose the fan assembly, do not align properly (see picture)...I continued with assembly thinking this just an issue of over-tightening at the factory. So far, this does not seem to be an issue with the rower's operation. - The parts list in the owner's manual failed to list a good half or more of the hardware that is included...however ALL hardware needed was physically present. - This might be a design/manufacturing defect or just me but on page 11 the instructions state to insert the locking pin (part 54) to lock the rail with the main frame...however, it appears it locks nothing in place...nothing on the rail extends far enough into the main frame assembly for the pin to go through (see picture). There is a locking knob (part 53) that really snugs the rail in place. So far, even with the locking pin apparently doing nothing, there is no wobble in the rail due to the locking knob. Have any other purchasers noticed this as well? - In my initial test row, after every 3-4 pulls, I hear a click-click noise coming from the fan assembly...I don't feel anything in the handle and the resistance remains smoothe...I'm hoping this is just the strap recoil mechanism reloading and it's nothing major that will cause issues down the road. The good: - Fast delivery and no damage in transport. - Inexpensive compared to the commercial grade Concept rowers. - Assembly was relatively easy (except for a few issues mentioned above)...took about 1.5 hours to assemble and most of that was trying to figure out the locking pin. - The electronics and sensors for speed and distance appear to work properly. - I've never exercised on a rower but after a 5 minute test row I was a bit winded and I could feel it in my shoulders and legs. - The rail folds up and you can roll the rower out of the way if needed. I will post a follow up review after a few weeks of use and hopefully bump my rating up a star or 2. UPDATE (Jul 4, 2016): figured out the locking pin...it's to lock the rail in the vertical position when you fold up the rower for storage. UPDATE (Jul 6, 2016): the clicking noise every 4-5 pulls is definitely not normal according to other users who've commented; upon further inspection of the rower, it appears the fan assembly is slightly out of alignment with the main frame and attached rail...I believe this is causing the clicking noise...since the fan assembly and main frame are pre-assembled and shipped as a single part from the factory, I think something is out of sorts with the internal construction of this component ; I've only used the rower for about 20 minutes and have stopped using it for now in fear that further use may cause damage; I've contacted Stamina for advisement on next steps on how to resolve this issue; for now, I'm adjusting my rating down to 2 stars and waiting to see how Stamina handles the situation. (also, attempted to attach video with the clicking noise) FINAL UPDATE (Jul 14, 2016): Stamina customer service never contacted me to provide guidance on the situation. So, I returned the rower to Amazon. Leaving the rating at 2 stars for the bad workmanship and obviously poor tolerances when it comes to quality control at the factory. However, I feel that if you get one of these rowers and its pre-assembled parts have been constructed properly then this could be a very beneficial piece of exercise equipment.
