not what I hoped
As a retired Marine I am always a little excited to see a future for my beloved Corps. There was some thought into how the USMC moved through the years and became the UFMC. I liked the ideas and the combination of all of the different traditions. Then there is the rest of the book. Clumsy writing. Overuse of stereotypes and tropes. Information dumps that were pointless or lacked context. And worst of all...I just didn't care about the characters. The whole thing lacked passion and depth. I never felt like the main character (Ryck) cared about anything but himself. Almost an outsiders view of what was going on which is puzzling because bootcamp can be such an intensely emotional inner journey. I will just skip over the fact that ALMOST every woman in the book was a whore. Not terrible, but disappointing. Heinlein, Scalzi, and Jean Johnson all do much better at portraying bootcamp.
