I want my 1st generation back!
I am a super happy user of the 1st Generation Nest. I love it! So I immediately ordered the 2nd Generation (pre order) giving my 1st generation Nest to my parents (they are very happy now!). I also installed the Nest to a couple of friends so I have a little bit of experience with this product. Now I am very frustrated with the 2nd Generation because two problems that for me is just a lack of quality control in the 2nd Generation: 1) Screen activation sensor: With the 1st Generation I was very happy. The screen activation worked even when I walked close to the nest. Sometimes I had my hands with food or something and I wanted to see the temp of the house and was awesome to see the screen on without even touching anything. Now with the 2nd Generation installed in the same place... I have to wave my hand several times in front of the Nest to activate the screen and as far as I know there is no way to change the sensitivity of the sensor. 2) The base is installed very well and is not moving at all but the Nest has a weird movement once installed in the base (not sturdy as the 1st generation). The feeling is even worst when you rotate or press the nest. It feels like is going to fall from the base in any moment. This problem is also reported in several forums and also in a couple of other reviews here in Amazon for the 2nd Generation along with the other problem with the sensor. Some users even reported that Nest Support told them to factory reset the Nest to see if that fix the sensor but no luck with that. I never did anything different with my 1st Generation and the sensor worked perfectly. I also waited the whole week to leave the Nest to "learn" my house like the 1st one. The Auto-Away is showing ready so I think all the sensors are "ready" to detect at least my hand moving in front of the Nest right? Other than that is fine with the same features of the 1st Generation (if you have the last update installed) but I prefer the construction and quality of the 1st Generation and I am returning this one. I am sending this review to Nest to see if they have any possible solution to my issues before returning the product. If that is the case then I will update my review. UPDATE 1: I have been waiting for more than 24 hours for the answer of Nest Support... lets see what they have to say and I really hope they have good solutions to my 2 issues. I am ready to buy one of the last Nest 1st Generation on sale on Amazon even before returning this one because I am starting to hate the product and the feeling is not fair with the 1st Generation. UPDATE 2: I received an email from Nest with a return authorization. So I should receive a new 2nd Gen. Nest on Tuesday. If I notice the same problems in that one too then I will return the Nest to Amazon for a refund to buy a 1st Generation Nest again. UPDATE 3: (11/1/12) I received the replacement from Nest so I replaced everything including the base to see if this one can be as sturdy as my 1st Generation... no luck... the new one is exactly the same as the first 2nd Gen received so definitively is a problem with the 2nd Generation. For you guys who does not have a way to compare with the 1st Generation then you probably won't notice any problem but I can tell you that the 1st Generation was WAAAY Better build . Now I am testing the motion sensor... I will give one week before I decide. So far I already noticed some moments where I need to move my hand several times to activate the Nest so the result of the test is not promising... UPDATE 4: (12/16/12) No changes with the motion sensor problem and very similar to the original 2nd generation Nest received. I already sent 2 emails to Nest Support with no answer after waiting several days so Customer Support is lowering their quality too. Updating my rating from 2 to 1 star until Nest fix this problem with a new version of the second generation and I hope they respond to the early adopters of the 2nd Generation. VIDEO OF MY TWO PROBLEMS is located in You Tube just search "2 problems with Nest 2nd Generation". Good luck with your 2nd Generation!
