★★☆☆☆
Flawed design, does not perform as advertised.
I bought this directly from the Kickstarter program, not from Amazon. I tried to contact GoSun with my issues, but apparently they are not interested in anything but glowing reviews. If I post a review on their Facebook page I'm sure they will take it down so I'm resorting to here. The concept is brilliant, but the execution leaves a LOT to be desired. So here are my 'Cons':
1 - It is supposed to be for backpacking. The steel cooking tray slides in and is 'supposed' to be locked in place by a very slight collar of fabric when the zipper is zipped up tight. The only problem is that ALL zippers loosen up as they are used and this one is no exception. So.... if you take it on hikes as intended you have to be very careful, once it is a 'little' used, to strap it on with the end that the tray slides out of in the up direction or else, as has happened to me 3X now the tray will slide out and fall on the ground because it is not held firmly any longer by the loosened zipper. The tray won't break but if you don't notice... now you've lost the tray.
Ok defect #2 :
2 - The claims for heating and cooking are exaggerated. You can boil water on a clear sunny day, but I live in New England and a haze or intermittent clouds make it either a very long wait (2 hours) or a complete failure and that is only to get to 212 degF. Cooking is out of the question. If you think you're going to have coffee or tea or breakfast... forget it and that goes for a dinner as the Sun get lower in the sky. So you'll have to get used to eating mid-day. I believe that this problem would be corrected if GoSun had designed this oven with a larger solar collection surface, say 50% more collection area, but they didn't and the poor heating performance is the result. Even in bright sun it takes 40 minutes or more to bring 13 ounces of water to a boil where my MSR gasoline stove does a quart in 4 minutes.
3 Last one:
The stand incorporated into the case is completely inadequate. They give you a small A shaped plastic piece that is supposed to insert into what I think is a carry handle and at the same time somewhat adjustable to aim at the sun. The only instruction is how to insert it and the admonition is "... if the oven is stable.... start cooking...". Well, it's barely stable with NO wind and with a wind forget it. They sell an add-on that is supposed to make it work better, but I think a device should work adequately out of the box... not require additional expense to 'fix' a problem. My method of compensating is to use a couple of small logs cut in the woods to support the oven and a cross piece to aim it properly at the sun.... that works.
The aiming system is 'ok' but not so easy to use as you have to get your head almost in the way to read both the sun dot and shadow dot properly. They could have done better.. or at least that's my opinion.
I consider these to be serious defects that make the oven unusable for actual camping and wilderness experience I give it two stars, One for a great Idea and a second because under 'some' circumstances it does work, but I'd only use it for emergencies after my experience with it for regular camping and actually for emergencies, I'd buy a better solar oven... one that works under wider conditions.
