★★☆☆☆
Deviates far too much from a great book series
The book series already has such an amazing story, it is sad to see Amazon take only the very most basic premise of it and change everything else. Especially when many of those changes do not make sense and detract from what was already there. ---Spoilers below--- While many reviews seem to be complaining about casting choices as the main thing, I honestly don't care much about that. The Two Rivers is also supposed to have a vibe more like The Shire, but I suppose I can even get behind the changes to make it more "modern" with Rand and Egwene sleeping together. What really bothers me though is the major changes to backstories and what is going on with the main characters. Matt and his family are completely different, but given things that go on later I can maybe come to accept. Perrin now being married and having his own forge and no more being an apprentice to Master Luhan is such a major change that it won't square at all with the future story he was supposed to have. Same with Morrain and Lan, they are implied to be sleeping together in the show now which completely ruins the whole storyline of Lan and Nynaeve, as well as the whole minor storyline of Morrain and Thom. Speaking of which, where is Thom?? I have only watched two episodes so far so maybe he comes in by episodes 3 or 4, but he was such a major part of the books even from the very beginning that it is sad to see his entire story that was in the books being cut. The changes to the meat of the story of Rand and Egwene is also sad, there is nothing in the books about the Wisdom not being able to marry and have kids at all, but I guess since they cut out Nynaeve's storyline they also had to cut the backstory of Rand and Egwene. I am also quite disappointed with the change to the search for "the dragon". With now having four ta'veran, Morrain already knowing about Egwene, and barely caring at all about the three boys. In the books, it is stressed over and over that it MUST be a man, and the important reasons behind it as well as why it is so terrifying a prospect. The show cut most of that away. With everything else changes and being cut, I can already guess at some other changes we will see if the show goes past season 2 and those will be pretty sad to see as well.
