Doesn't record motion for the first minutes, will miss whole visits & deliveries
This Doorbell is not recording motion for the first few minutes, which makes it fairly useless. At this rate it will miss drop-by visits and whole deliveries.
I have the doorbell attached to my apartment door. It failed to record me opening my door, opening the screen door and propping it open, setting stuff on the table outside, closing the door, locking locks, taking some photos of my door with the Ring Doorbell on it, then closing the screen door in front of it (it can see through the screen), and checking the Ring app on my phone.
It then recorded ONLY a short video of me grabbing my stuff from the table and walking away.
This is a ridiculous amount of activity for it to ignore.
I have checked everything. The internet connection is good. The motion zone is expanded to the whole screen. The motion sensitivity is set all the way up. The motion frequency is set to Frequent. There are no motion schedules. It just doesn't work.
EDIT: It seemed to have some improvement the next day while I was leaving for and then returning from work, but it still missed the beginning of activity.
--- Additionally, when it does start, the video is choppy and unclear and has to clarify itself, so it is missing even more activity to start, and may miss everything that is important. ---
Also, I have had Pre-Roll selected in the Settings the entire time. There is no Pre-Roll, there isn't even the beginning of serious activity. I don't know what Pre-Roll is supposed to do.
Then in the afternoon/evening, it completely ignored me taking out the trash, coming back in from taking out the trash, and a couple hours later when another person came by and opened the door and entered right past the Ring Doorbell. 0 recordings at all.
The next day it recorded us going out, but missed a larger portion of the beginning, not recording us holding the door open with the camera pointed right at us, and shuffling past it with all our stuff. Then when it did record while I was locking up, it glitched the middle of the recording with freezing video and garbled audio.
Again, the internet connection reads as good. Motion zone is full screen and sensitivity is all the way up, and motion checking is "Frequent". I tried switching to the 5G network, but it had stronger signal on the 2.4 (usually around 48) so I put it back.
I tried using the Wizard in settings for "missing events I want to see", and it recommended to turn off the Smart Alerts, so I tried that. Disappointing that something that's supposed to give you better alerts would be suspected of making the motion detection worse though.
The Wizard also recommended turning off Advanced Motion Detection, however, if I do that, I lose the full screen motion zone that I want. The curved bottom of the screen motion zones that come with not having Advanced Motion Detection on are not good enough for my view field, I really need the whole screen.
Additionally, if Advanced Motion Detection is making the motion detection *worse*, this is a major failing of the device in itself. Major failing.
At this point it is still failing to capture motion. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It almost completely ignored me leaving my apartment and coming back in twice the other day, catching only a piece of one of my trips back in, in the middle of all that. Everything else was skipped. The next morning it didn't record any of my leaving for work. No door movement, walking by, putting stuff down, locking up, closing screen door, picking stuff up, walking away. Nothing.
Doorbell 4 is a total failure as a security camera device.
