Colossal Disappointment
It's nice that HBO Now is available on all devices and not just Apple anymore. I'm subscribing just long enough to watch Game of Thrones, and then I'm out. Why? The problems are myriad.
1. First and foremost, it is frustratingly slow. I have given up trying to watch certain movies because they sit there loading for four to five minutes. The average load time is 20-30 seconds, which is still incredibly slow. If you fast-forward or rewind, you have to wait again for the elongated buffering.
2. To make the wait time even worse, each show has a separate file that loads first, where you have to watch the HBO logo and then a breakdown of the show rating for 10 seconds. Then the wait time starts over as the actual show file loads.
3. The left-right arrows on my Roku remote do not work like on Netflix or Amazon Prime or YouTube. You can't use them to skip forward, and there is no preview at the bottom to help you know where to jump to. It's a guessing game (with extra long waiting times).
4. It does not remember where I leave off in a movie. I gave up trying to finish the Godfather 1&2 combination because I spent 20 minutes between waiting for it to load and jumping back and forth trying to figure out where I had left off.
5. On top of all this frustration, many of the shows have advertisements for HBO before the show plays. I'm already a subscriber! Why are you still trying to sell me on HBO?
6. Some of the movies they show in their ads aren't even available to watch, such as the Martian.
7. The movie selection is terrible. Go to the action section and there are maybe three movies I've ever heard of. The rest are movies from the 80s or 90s that nobody has ever heard of. For a home box office, it's pretty crummy.
8. The price tag of $15 a month is an absolute rip-off considering the service and selection of Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix are all infinitely better and at almost half the price.
If you really want to watch Game of Thrones as soon as it's available each Sunday, then suffer through this service for a few months like me. Otherwise, it is an absolutely terrible service. Plus, many of the best series are already available on Amazon Prime anyway, so there isn't much point in HBO Now.
