This is Rock Salt that Burns Pets' Paws
Redmond and Amazon are working together to mislead folks like me, who are just trying to de-ice their sidewalks in a pet-friendly way.
In Chicago, where you are de-icing the public sidewalk in front of your house, which dogs walk on regularly, you try to be a good citizen by choosing a pet friendly de-icer that does not burn the dogs' paws. It seems like a product prominently labelled "Pet Safe" by Redmond would fit the bill.
Check out this gobbledygook from their Redmond's Amazon listing for this product:
SAFER SOLUTION FOR KIDS AND PETS: Ice Slicer is dye-free, urea-free, and polymer-free ice melt. It’s also so safe, it’s become a key ingredient in Redmond’s bestselling products for animals – products that promote optimal health in agricultural and wildlife management operations.
That description makes it sound like it wouldn't burn dogs paws. But, lo and behold, when I get the bag, what's inside of it? Rock Salt!
I'd like to have a Q&A session with the Redmond product manager and ask him what exactly qualifies this product as "Pet Safe?" Is it because they applied a tablespoon to a dog's kibble and it didn't croak? That seems a bit misleading.
And Amazon, a question for you: If one of your sellers is selling a bag of rock salt, should not they be required to say in their product listing on your website that rock salt is what is in the bag?
Amazon is the perfect platform for companies like Redmond to make a sale by misleading folks who are trying to look out for the neighborhood dogs.
Caveat emptor!
Now I have to figure out how to return a 25# bag.
Since it's kid safe, maybe I should use it as ice cream maker salt. 🤔
