This alarm worked well for 4 months (i.e. it detected occasional cooking smoke, and had no false alarms). After 4 months, it started to beep randomly, then beeped in a pattern that indicated that the product was defective and needed to be replaced. Calling the First Alert customer service center was quite an eye opener—they first sought to blame the malfunction on me (despite it being in service for only a few months) and claimed that it's beeping because it's dirty - however it was spotless, and the pattern by their own definition is indicative of a product defect. A rather long and less-than-civil discussion then ensued. They did finally agree to replace it, but only after keeping me on hold for a long while. I will update this review when I get the new unit. Based on the fact that this 10-year detector lasted less than 6 months, and the company's attitude I would look elsewhere.
