Do not buy this scanner for photo archiving
This scanner produces blurry images from negatives. I had been using my ten year old Epson 2450 scanner which was doing a great job scanning prints and negatives. The 2450 finally failed and the Epson Perfection V600 was the most similar scanner I could find. I started scanning negatives - many of which were snapshots taken with 1940s and 1950s cameras, so I wasn't particularly surprised when the pictures were soft looking because many of I had seen that with the 2450. However, I became suspicious when color negatives were very blurry. Focus on this scanner is not adjustable, but it can be changed by raising the images above the scanner glass. The negative holders actually do this to keep the negatives from touching the scanner bed glass. However, raising the negatives does not sharpen the results, it makes them blurrier. I conclude I would have to place the negatives LOWER than the scanner glass or somehow raise the scanning carriage to bring my negatives into focus. My final experiment was to rescan a negative of an image which the 2450 had produced a sharp result. The V600 produced a blurry image using both the film holder and another scan placing the negative directly on the scanner glass. An identical portion of the resulting image from each scanner is included in the picture below
