What about economics?
Readers of Gopnik need to also read Tom Frank's far superior critique of "liberalism," Listen, Liberal! Identity Politics liberalism has great accomplishments in advancing justice for minorities, women, gays, and Jews. But liberal moderation economically has meant the neoliberalism that created the Trump Rust Belt backlash by ruining the working class to explode the wealth of the rich with globalization, tech, and undermining unions. it's no shock when a Manhattanite like Gopnik makes a case for Identity Politics and the neoliberal economic "moderation" for the rich that has come with it. What Frank would reply is that we need FDR New Deal economic liberalism, first and foremost, today, which would require a much more serious transformation of our political economy than anything that moderate neoliberals like Gopnik and Biden have in mind. Liberals of all stripes have no trouble rallying around Idenity Politics; none oppose it. The fight comes over the economy. In that fight, Gopnik is implicitly carrying water for the neoliberal fat cats who revel in the same economic inequality Trump and his oligarchs do.
