phone must be turned on to be able to receive SMS
I was disappointed with a few things that i guess i didn't do my research well before buying my watch,
1) if you buy this for your kid, KNOW that web content cannot be filtered like you can do on his iPhone (as of now)
2) if you use the cellular connection it will barley last a full day (in my experience)
3) read from Apple's website: To receive SMS from third-party apps, MMS from third-party apps, or push notifications from third-party apps on your cellular model of Apple Watch, your paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular, but it doesn't need to be nearby. You also need to be signed in to iMessage on your iPhone.
Otherwise its a 5 star and i hope they add parental controls to be able to restrict content on the watch, even though it doesn't have a built in browser you can open any link from the messages app for example. although the watch is not meant to be used for browsing its still important because kids are kids...
