Can't recommend given quality issues
Update 3/4/19: After assigning 5 stars to this unit, I can no longer recommend. My parents unit lasted less than 3 years and I was determined to fix it myself after my mom received a repair bill estimate for $2600. Estimate included replacing motor and breaker/bearing expensive parts. I chalked this up to my parents not doing a great job of maintaining/cleaning their unit. But they did clean it at least annually. So, as I was in the midst of exploring replacement part costs for their unit, MY UNIT started seizing up. After a few calls to Scotsman technical support, it appears either my evaporator needs replacing or something else is preventing the unit from making ice. I have attached pictures of their motor/evaporator and mine. My unit has been in service since 2012. I have meticulously maintained my unit. Cleanings every 6 months, RO water quality (with Ca++/K+ water additives to address the reactive nature of RO water) being used for supply, and now realizing less than 7 years of service, I will either need a new unit (recommendation by Scotsman support!) or a very large repair bill which will somewhat equal the price of a new unit. My sisters unit has also had issues, but her's was with the water reservoir leaking. So in conclusion: great ice maker....when it is working. If you can swing $4000 every 3-6 years on a new ice maker unit, this ones for you. I will be looking for a less expensive alternative going forward. Very unfortunate to have such high repair bills and parts for ice makers that don't last longer than this. Original Post: I agree with the other posts on this product. This is the 3rd Scotsman unit I've either purchased or installed (for my parents) and absolutely love this ice maker. Admittedly, anyone spending this much on an ice maker better enjoy soft ice or have reasons why this would be their ideal unit. My family previously had a KitchenAid model which constantly ran and made noise (different way ice production is made with those units) and elderly parents purchased a Hoshizaki unit. The Hosh undercounter had so many problems. New drain pump required, constant problems with the ice sensor shutoff causing ice to push open the door among others. With this Scotsman, we've had our first unit for 3 yrs now and this truly is commercial grade with no problems thus far. Easy to install for the DIY'er. Sister and her family also has this unit. Pro's: quick ice production, quiet, drain pump seems to run less than KA model, less water used given auger system of ice production, sensor shutoff does good job keeping bin full while not over producing, LED light reminder for cleaning every 6 mo ( a great idea to protect this investment and help ensure unit functions properly for years), ice bin seems to keep ice from melting longer than previous units we've owned, lighted LED light when opening door, and auto shutoff LED when water is not supplied. Cons's: cost, kids hang on door causing door hinge needing to be replaced (our fault, but plastic part inside hinge could be heavier duty).. All in all - highly recommend this well made unit. I would suggest going ahead and getting the cleaner and bottle dispenser for cleaning the unit in 6 mo. It takes about 40 min to clean the unit (you have to add 16oz acidic solution to remove scale and build up) but is easy to do if you just follow manual instructions. Thanks Scotsman for making a good residential nugget ice maker!
