Guilt trip
Sweet in theory. There were 2 big issues I found with this book as both a Veterinary Technician and someone that has a lot of experience working with human and pet hospice patients and families: 1) The boy talks about how he always said I love you to his dog but that his other siblings did not. This is mentioned multiple times and it makes him seem superior because he did that. It's ridiculous. Sure, some kids might tell their pets that every single day, but in many other busy households, the love we have for our pets is shown more than said, and that's OK. I also don't like that it could induce a massive amount of unnecessary guilt and weigh heavy on a sensitive and grieving child's conscience if they were old enough to realize they did not say it every single day. Just unnecessary and I wish they had left that entire theme out! 2) In the book, the dog gets fatter and fatter and the vet says it's just because he's getting old. Hmmmm... As a vet tech, that's generally not the case nor what a vet would tell an owner concerned about uncharacteristic weight gain. We'd test for possible disorders, recommend a senior food and less of it, exercise, or any other number of recommendations because extra weight on an elderly pet is not good for them at all. There are better, similar books out there. We especially liked: Saying Goodbye to Lulu by Corinne Demas Jasper's Day by Marjorie Blain Parker
