★★☆☆☆
Lacked depth and felt rushed
Not really what I was hoping for after waiting for a Picoult quality novel about living through this pandemic. Was hoping for something less anecdotal and more 360 degree view of these strange times we are living through. Novels like My Sisters Keeper, Plain Truth, The Pact, Change if Heart…. and others she has written have generally presented multiple views into very complex issues. Her most recent novels (this one and A Spark of Light, particularly) seem to push the the idea a singular view into very complicated issues and also seem to simplistically conclude that the opinions and thoughts that are contrary to the opinions and thoughts pushed by the novel are based in ignorance. It’s a discredit to the amazing beings that all humans are. Jodi, in previous novels, has always been able to make me see things from multiple perspectives and has also made me realize that my “rights and wrongs” are not absolute…. Meaning they are not the same rights and wrongs that everyone else should have. Her previous novels have thought me that there isn’t always a right answer. Her more recent novels aren’t doing it for me. They aren’t making me think of a concept from multiple angles and helping me to see the humanity that plays into complicated lives. Her recent novels are definitely feeling more divisive (a sign of our current times) and less contemplative. She’s not giving much credit to human beings as being intelligent and capable of educated reasoning that might lead to a different conclusion than that being pushed in the plot.
