It only wanted to connect via WEP, not WPA - NetGear support was no help
I purchase an EX6100 from Amazon for $89. It only took 20 mins of NetGear phone support, it was up and running with my WPA security. I was pretty happy with NetGear.
A week or so later, it stopped working. After 2 hours on the phone with NetGear support, it was determined I needed a replacement, AND I had to pay the shipping cost to send the malfunctioning product back.
The replacement finally arrived. After more hours on the phone, including an unexpected call from NetGear at 2am, NetGear support determined this replacement will not work with WPA, and I must lower my security to WEP. No way!
I could not get a refund from Amazon, even though I was still within the time limit, because this replacement has a different serial number than the one I purchased. NetGear support tells me that they will not offer a refund either. I'm told my only option is they will replace the defective replacement with another EX6100 or a cheaper model. What kind of Customer Support is this?
Now, a WN3000RP just arrived. This is a $20 cheaper model, and I get to eat that cost difference. I'm afraid to open the box and call NetGear for support to get it running.
UPDATE: Another 2 hours on the phone with NetGear trying to get the WN3000RP to work and they could not (I can't tell you how many times I had to run through the NetGear Genie). Of course, they offered to send me another (Oh please) so I told them 'thanks for nothing' and spent some time digging around online. Turns out, the exact problem was the extender (both models) do not like WPA2PSK-TKIP. All they needed to advise me to do was change to WPA2PSK-AES (one of them did suggest switching to WEP, but that's different).
Now I've got the WN3000RP set up about 30 feet from my router, and it bumps my wifi another 30 feet or so, through a brick wall (so did the EX6100 when I tested it). The only real difference I can see is that the EX6100 sets up with both a 2G and a 5G connection to choose from, whereas the WN3000RP only has 5G. Why would I want 2G if I can have 5G?
Hope all this helps whoever needs this info.
