This is an updated review. Below you’ll see what I originally thought when I first bought it. I have had my new iPhone XR for less than 30 days and I just filed a claim to have it replaced through AppleCare. Last week I dropped my phone face down from a little over two feet off the ground. It was in my otter box commuter. I picked it up and it was fine, until I looked at the back a few minutes later. The entire glass back is shattered. This is not a replaceable part, so it’s a $99 deductible for a replacement phone. Nothing came in contact with the part that broke. I only heard the light sound of rubber hitting the floor. This was a nothing fall, and honestly I wouldn’t have expected damage even with no case at all. These things are “shock certified” (sarcasm). I called the company and asked what that means, since they obviously do nothing for shock, and turns out to be just a nonsense term that carries no promises or guarantees, so it might as well be “unicorn certified” because it means nothing. So this piece of junk is getting returned. I don’t know if it’ll offer better protection, and I hate screen protectors, but I’m getting a life proof. At least they’ll stand by their product and replace your device if it breaks while inside it. I have owned many otter box cases. Commuters and defenders for multiple different iPhones. This is the first one I’ve given 4 stars instead of 5. I really don’t like the squared off front. It is very thick and bulky, barely thinner than a defender would be. I had a commuter on my iPhone 6 Plus. I absolutely loved that case. It was rounded around the front edges. It really felt like it had the best possible protection without having a screen cover or being overly bulky. I don’t know if they could do anything about the thickness. The iPhone XR is significantly thicker than my iPhone 6 Plus, and the camera sticks out a lot further, but I don’t see any reason for the extra bulky squared off front. It should also wrap around the front of the phone a bit more. I have glass screen protector on my XR and this case is almost 1/8” away from the screen protector the whole way around. Looks like I’ll have a little trough around the edge of my screen to collect dust and grossness. Like all otter box cases, it seems like it’ll give excellent protection. Over the past few days I’m getting used to it. I’m still considering sending this back and getting a Symmetry.
