The OXO On 9
I've used this coffee maker for 3 weeks now, coming from a 10yr old Delonghi thermal carafe model that stopped working. I bought the OXO at a local store with one of their widely available 20% off coupons.
I love great coffee but I am not a coffee hobbyist. I prize a machine that makes great coffee with a minimal daily time investment. The OXO On 9 does just that.
Initially I followed the directions closely and used 65g of coffee for 9 cups. The coffee was way too strong. Maybe it is because I grind my coffee on the fine side, but I've found 28g-34g for a full pot works perfectly for me. I was happy to find that I could use a bit less coffee compared to my old pot for the same volume of water. I like my coffee on the strong side, so I imagine the grind would have to be pretty coarse to require 65g. I would have returned the machine if it would have doubled my coffee budget.
Here's what I really like about the OXO:
- The coffee is excellent, I can really taste the difference over my other coffee makers, perhaps primarily due to the brewing temperature. I measured the temp of the water at 205deg from the OXO sprayer head. My old Delonghi measured 178deg brew water, and a cheap-o coffee maker I was temporarily using measured 182deg. I use reasonably priced but decent quality coffee ground in the store, the cheapest flat bottom filters (they work just fine in this machine), unfiltered tap water, I do not preheat the carafe - and again, the coffee is excellent.
- The carafe is outstanding:
-- the coffee stays hot much longer than it did with my old machine. I work from home and often have coffee as much as 4 hours after brewing - the coffee is still warm where with my old pot it would have been cold. I do not preheat the carafe.
-- The carafe's classic look is attractive, especially compared to the squat type coffee pots
-- The coffee can be poured without fussing with the lid - simply pour it in your cup. It has a tiny door that seals when the pot is at rest. Other pots I've used require what is akin to solving a puzzle to get the coffee to pour - no rotating lids or alignment of indicators here, and the pot produces a healthy flow of coffee.
The machine has an attractive, clean design, it does not beep, it brews more quickly than other machines I've owned, and it is cool to see the heated brew water rise to the brew head.
Nitpicks:
- The water reservoir and brew lids seem somewhat flimsy and I'm concerned they may not last for many years.
- I wish there was a way to hide the clock, I don't need another clock to keep set.
- The machine does not have a water filter
- Descaling is flawed - the machine forces descaling whether it needs it or not. I had to descale 3 times to reset the indicator, which has nothing to do with scale buildup.
The brewed coffee is transferred to the carafe so securely that my kitchen no longer gets the fresh brewed coffee smell that I love. But I expect it's all the better to reserve that goodness for the cup.
I received no compensation for my review and I am not foolish enough to trust compensated reviewers.
