Disappointing
I recently upgraded to the new Kindle in hopes that the amber light would help my sleeping issues. While I like the larger screen size, smoother surface, and the amber light, Amazon’s new case options are super disappointing. My older Kindle of six years had a lovely leather case. It was padded and felt luxurious and all the edges were softened. These new cases are harder, thinner, and have sharper edges. The cork case, which I expected great things from was the most disappointing. It feels cheap and like it won’t take much to rip. What’s more, the inside liner has no absorbency at all — after reading for a few minutes, my fingers were sweating and the case felt sticky and slippery. Yuck. Not to mention, when it’s opened, the sharp edge sticks out on the right side and isn’t pleasant for right hand holding. This is not a keeper. The fabric case is the same basic construction, but it does feel sturdier and the outside fabric is nicer to the touch. It has a microfiber inside liner that’s much more pleasant for holding while reading and doesn’t feel sweaty after reading for more than a half hour. The right edge goes back further when closed as well, so it’s less abrasive to hold with my right hand. What I don’t like about either version is the sharp line between the plastic case wrap and Kindle on the right side — my old one had, again, a much softer edge that curved further around the device and didn’t feel sharp on my thumb while holding. Bottom line: I am only moderately pleased with the fabric case but it’s considerably better than the $50 cork case, so I’m keeping the fabric case. Amazon, does no one test these products out as compared to your previous versions? How is it you’ve let your quality suffer so?
