That Jenji Kohan could turn this dull, poorly written chronicle of Kerman's term in prison into a brilliantly funny, compelling series, replete with extraordinary characters, attests to her genius. Kerman has no powers of description, no idea of form; the book is a shapeless mass of people who never come to life, incidents that sometimes recur as if she'd forgotten she'd already mentioned them. It's as if it was culled from a teenager's diary. It's awful!
