Bought my 1st couple replacement kits as directed, then realized I probably shouldn't have
After having my soclean for a couple of years and realizing that this replacement kit was costing me 80 bucks a year in addition to what I paid for the unit, I wondered if the kit was really necessary. I searched the net to figure out what kind of specialized filter would be needed in an ozone generator, (we use one of these in our hot tub too with no filter) and didn't get a lot of good information other than ozone is unstable and bonds with virtually anything it can, and that activated charcoal/carbon converts it back to oxygen by bonding with the extra unstable molecule. That prompted me to open up the filter case, and here are pictures of what is inside. Seems to be a very small piece of a carbon filter. One sheet of inexpensive carbon media filter could last a lifetime if you just replaced the cube of carbon every few months. And the check valve? Well, if it quits working and lets water into the unit - that could be problematic, but I don't understand why it would need to be replaced every 6 months unless it's not made well. As far as the argument that it accumulates bacteria - that would completely destroy the whole premise of the soclean - that the O3 kills 99.9 percent of germs . . . . I ordered a sheet of activated carbon filter for under 7 dollars Deep Blue Professional ADB41002 Super Activated Carbon Media Pad, 18 by 10-Inch, and that should last me until well after this thing is obsolete or dies.
