★☆☆☆☆
Pull Down the Blind. Nothing to See Here.
The Woman in the Window moves rapidly and the writing is brisk and clear. And the author, a book editor, certainly knows his genre, although the Hitchcock and noir references at times feel like pepper sprinkled on a dish after it's cooked. And alcoholic female unreliable narrators can become irritating, rather than targets of empathy. I'll confess I dislike Girl on a Train. At least he put "Woman" in the title. The number of books titled (and retitled) using the word "Girl" has become a plague. What truly baffles me though are the reviews praising the "twists" in the story. I'll try and avoid spoilers here. The first twist concerns a character who claims to be someone the narrator (Anna Fox) says is impossible. Well, it isn't. If flipped, a second obvious conclusion should be glaringly obvious. It isn't until way too late in the book that the flip finally occurs. The next "twist," obvious VERY early on, concerns Anna's family. The last "twist" can only be called a twist by readers unfamiliar with the standard mystery trope of "least likely person." So, all I can say in conclusion is "Pull down the blind. Nothing to see here."
